Homemade BBQ Sauce

I always make my own sauce.  This is a tomato based sauce, since no one in this house is a huge fan of true NC BBQ, which is vinegar based.  So if you like tomato based sauces….this is the sauce for you.

Ingredients:

6oz can Tomato Paste (can use sauce, just use 4 oz or 1/2 C)

2 C water (if using sauce only add 1 1/2 C)

1 tsp. White Wine Vinegar

3T Molasses

1 tsp. Chili Powder

1 1/2 tsp. Sea Salt (I prefer Garlic Salt, but its not necessary)

1/2 tsp. Fresh Diced Garlic

1 T Brown Sugar

1 tsp. Honey (This isn’t necessary, but it is a flavor we love)

1 tsp. Paprika

1-3 dashes Cayenne Pepper

2T Onion Powder (Can use flake, but powder makes sauce more fluid thin)

Directions:

Over low heat, mix water and tomato paste with whisk.  Add the rest of ingredients and whisk well.  Bring to boil and continue to cook for about 10 minutes.  Store in airtight container after sauce has cooled.

This makes approximately 2 cups of sauce.  I usually double the recipe when I make it because its so good my family inhales it.

*Can add more brown sugar for sweeter sauce, or more cayenne for more heat.

**This sauce can be canned for use over longer time periods.  We usually do this because we always need BBQ sauce in our household.
